Pinang grows well from sea level to 1000 m elevation. The species is shade-tolerant. The sweet-scented male flowers are visited by bees and other insects for nectar. However, insects have not been observed visiting the female flowers. It is thought that most of the flowers are wind pollinated. The tree is exclusively seed propagated.
