Putat hutan can be found flourishing in mangrove forests, primary and secondary forests along tidal creeks, rivers, and swampy areas, as well as on sandy or rocky shores, reaching elevations of up to 900 meters. The flowers bloom at night and slightly wither during the day, lasting about a week before falling off. Its fragrant flowers attract insects during the day and bats at night for pollination. A significant portion of the fruits are seedless, with seeds coated in fiber that aids in their dispersal by floating on water over considerable distances. Putat can be propagated through seeds or stem cuttings.
