Daun salam atau kelat samak is distributed from India to Indonesia. It grows well at open and shaded areas on well drain soil.

A tree of daun salam can be taken as an example of food chain: the leaf is a food plant for caterpillars; the flowers are visited by bees, wasps and other insects; the fruits are eaten by birds that provide food source for insect eating birds to visit the tree.
