The plant is fast-growing, low maintenance, can also be planted in large containers. It is tolerant of semi-shade. Flowers are visited by butterflies. This species is occasionally attacked by caterpillars, scale insects and nematodes. The leaves and unripened berries of the plant are toxic, and are confirmed to have killed children, dogs and cats. However, the fruits is eaten by songbirds without ill effects. It is propagated by seed. However stem cuttings propagation is more efficient.
